SCRUBS SALE
For many students, their first encounter with EMIG is through our scrubs sale in the summer before their first year. This event gives us the opportunity to introduce our group to the students as they begin their medical school careers and allows us to raise funds for some of the other interesting events mentioned below. We will hold another scrubs sale later in the year for second years and anyone else who might have missed out the first time around.
Shadowing a physician in the emergency department is an invaluable experience for those considering this specialty. We provide an opportunity for first and second year medical students to observe the inner workings of the department first hand. See the Mentoring Page.
BLOOD
DRAWING AND IV THERAPY SKILLS LABORATORY
We know, he's missing
gloves!
The blood-drawing skills laboratory introduces students to working with needles. Students first receive instruction regarding blood-born pathogen protection. Then they observe Attending and Resident Physician instructors demonstrate the skills. Participants then practice the skills on each other. All attempts are supervised by the faculty to ensure participant safety. An IV training arm is also available for veni-puncture skills practice.

SUTURE
LABORATORY

The basics of suturing are taught in this introductory lab. Students will learn: tying techniques, different suture types, and suturing materials. After some instruction, students may repair lacerated eggplants and pig's feet. No experience is necessary, but the number of participants will be limited. Sign up quickly when the laboratory is announced.
This year we will be holding an intubation workshop series. This is an exciting opportunity, so be sure to sign up quickly when it is announced as space will be limited. Students will review CPR essentials, anatomy of the airway, and how to properly intubate a patient. Students will practice on cadavers and/or mannekins.
This is a great opportunity for a first year medical student. It is a full-time, grant funded position that allows the student to shadow in the emergency department part of the week and conduct research with a physician for the remainder of the week during the summer.
You see the ambulances fly by all the time. Do you ever wonder what is going on inside? The EMIG ride-along program permits you to ride with an Advanced Life Support, Paramedic Unit as an observer. This is a great opportunity and is highly recommend for anyone interested in a career in Emergency Medicine and if you are lucky you may get to run the siren!. For more information please see the Ride-Along Page.
