  • Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity. (1986) (March Board 2005)

    Fun Family Medicine Facts

    1. Nearly 25% of all visits to the office-based physicians are made to family physicians.
    2. Average resident's salary $36K; average FT FP salary (2004 data) was $142K-$150k depending on the region (growing faster than any other physician specialty).
    3. Over 400 different FM Residency programs around the country
    4. There are six areas of medical training during residency: pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, psychiatry and neurology, surgery, and community medicine.
    5. After residency training some family physicians complete 1-2 year fellowship training programs in a number of diverse fields including: sports medicine, geriatrics, health policy, high-risk obstetrical care, medical informatics, and academic medicine.
    6. Average work week for a FT FP=40.9 hours (33 hours direct patient care).
    7. Hospital practice of family physicians-2004
      • 83.2% provide inpatient care
      • 21.1% do routine OB
      • 22.9% surgical-assist
      • 43.2% delivered care in the CCU
      • 48.0% delivered care in the ICU
    8. $67 billion would be saved by the US if every US citizen used a primary care physician.
