Dear JSA,

I hope that this e-mail finds the first years already sleeping before their LAST EXAM (!), and the second years done with day 4 of the first week of boards studying! This e-mail will be my last to you as JSA president, and I would like to thank all of you for a wonderful year. The experience was amazing, and I owe that to all of you.

One of the last things I have done before I hand everything over to Michelle is that I have added the audio of the Dr. Mitchell Bard talk (from May 6th) to the website. Whether you missed the event and want to hear what Dr. Bard had to say for the first time, or if you want to hear it again, you can find the file here. (I apologize for the empty space at the start of the file, but it is very easy to fast forward to the start of Dr. Bard’s speech).

And with that, I will close this last e-mail, and wish you all a Shabbat Shalom and best of luck in all the years to come. (Don’t worry – I will still be around to bother Michelle at as many events as possible!)

take care,

Adam Friedlander, MS II

Hello everyone! I hope that this e-mail finds you all anxiously awaiting a beautiful weekend. Mazal tov to the first years who have just finished their second to last exam on first year! To the second years, good luck this weekend as we prepare for our last classroom based exam, possibly of all time!!!

To everyone who was able to attend yesterday’s speaker, thank you and I hope you had a wonderful time. At the peak of attendance, we had approximately 80 people in FLH, and even at the end of the talk, after some had to leave for PD etc, we still had over 50 people in the room. Dr. Bard was impressed with our questions and interest, and hopes to speak on the UMB campus again.

As to upcoming events, there is one big one left – the Lag BaOmer BBQ at Hopkins this Sunday! We have been invited to join Baltimore Hillel along with all other Baltimore Area graduate and undergraduate students for a Lag Ba'Omer party and BBQ from 3pm-6pm at the Hopkins "Beach" on Charles Street. Click here for details.

We are also considering having one final JSA lunch to say goodbye this coming Thursday at noon, based on response to this e-mail. If you are interested, let me know, and I will see what I can scrounge up...

Either way, it has been a wonderful year, and thank you all so much. Michelle will do a wonderful job next year, and you will all certainly still see me at JSA events when I can get away from the depths of third year!

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach,

Adam

April 30, 2004

Hello everyone! I hope that you all had wonderful weeks, and I look forward to tonight’s pot-luck!

In case you missed the earlier e-mail, our year end speaker will be Dr. Mitchell Bard, and his talk will be about the “Myths and Facts of the Arab-Israeli Conflict.” Lunch will be served.

This event will be the culmination of my year as JSA president, and will also further one of our year long goals of supporting Israel’s right to exist on campus, while addressing anti-Israel media bias. To read more about Dr. Bard, click here.

I hope to see you all there, and please pass this information along to your various student groups!

Shabbat shalom,

April 25, 2004

The Jewish Student Association invites all those interested to attend a film screening tomorrow (Monday) in FLH, at 3:30pm. The film to be screened is Late Summer Blues, or Blues LaChofesh HaGadol in poorly transliterated Hebrew. :)

We are showing this film in honor of Israeli Memorial Day and Independence Day, which are on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Discussion will follow the film, time allowing.

Late Summer Blues was released in 1987, and "chronicles the events in the lives of seven Israeli students during the summer following high school graduation - a summer clouded by their impending induction into the army. A universal story of life under war's shadow, Late Summer Blues celebrates the innocence and idealism of youth while offering a grim reminder of the tragedy of war."

I hope that all those interested will attend.

Sincerely,

Adam Friedlander, MS II

April 16, 2004

Hello everyone. This e-mail has two purposes. The first is to remind all of you that we have a great event coming up on Monday at noon in MSTF 264/266 - see the website for details (http://davidge2.umaryland.edu/~jsa) or e-mail me! Also, please note the other upcoming events listed there.

The second and main purpose of this e-mail is that I would like to nominate Michelle Cohen, MS I, to be the new JSA President for the coming year. Michelle has been extremely active over the past year, and has some wonderful ideas for the coming year. She is sensitive to the needs of our diverse Jewish community here at UMDSOM, and I am confident that she will do a wonderful job as JSA President.

Over the past few weeks I have had several conversations with active and interested students, and my nomination has been unanimously supported by those who have voiced an opinion. To keep this as democratic as possible, I would like to ask that anyone concerned with my nomination contact me by Monday evening, and we will take things from there.

Shabbat Shalom,

Adam

April 15, 2004

Hello everyone. On Monday, April 19th, after the Year 2 exam, we will be having an event called "Israel at Heart" in MSTF 264/266. We will have a free bagel lunch, and a discussion with three young Israeli adults about their views on life in Israel. This will be a great event, so please come out. If you can give me some advance notice (an RSVP :) ), that would be great, but feel free to come at the last minute as well. I hope to see everyone there!

Also, bikur cholim, same time, same place (noon, pods).

Shabbat Shalom,

Adam Friedlander

P.S. Enjoy the challah this week!

April 9, 2004

Hello everyone! This e-mail will include a list of the great events we have coming up for April and May! Get excited!

Most importantly, from now on, all JSA events can be viewed at our New Website!!!

http://davidge2.umaryland.edu/~jsa/

One quick mention must be made that both Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) and Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) fall on Sundays this year, and Yom HaShoah is the day before a Year II exam. For those reasons, we will not have any specifically UMDSOM events, BUT I will be attending some events on my own. If you would like more information about either of these days historically or culturally, or if you would like information on services or ceremonies taking place on either day, just let me know. We will talk about Yom HaZikaron at our Yom HaAtzmaut celebration (this juxtaposition is appropriate as I will explain).

Without further ado, here is the list of events! (first short and then long)

Shabbat shalom and chag sameach,

Adam Friedlander, MS II
Jewish Student Association, President
University of Maryland School of Medicine

April 19: Israel at Heart

At 12:00pm on April 19th, right after the Year II exam, we will be having a wonderful event called "Israel at Heart." We will be joined by three Israeli young adults who will share with us their experiences growing up in Israel and serving in the Israeli Armed Forces. We will chat over a free lunch, and wind down after the Year II exam.

***This event is NOT a political one, and the only motivation for attendance should be the desire for good spirited conversation, and a desire to learn about these individuals' experiences***

Location: MSTF 264/266

April 30: Pot Luck Shabbat

You know the drill! RSVPs required!!! We will be having our monthly UMDSOM/Hopkins Med pot luck Shabbat dinner! They are always a ton of fun, so RSVP ASAP!

April 26: Yom Ha'Zikaron Commemoration and Yom Ha'Atzmaut Celebration

Israeli Memorial Day and Israeli Independence Day will be commemorated with a film screening and discussion in FLH at 3:30pm:

The Jewish Student Association invites all those interested to attend a film screening tomorrow (Monday) in FLH, at 3:30pm. The film to be screened is "Late Summer Blues", or "Blues LaChofesh HaGadol" in poorly transliterated Hebrew. :)

May 6: Myths and Facts About Israel  - CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE AUDIO OF THIS EVENT

Do you wonder about what is going on in the Middle East? Do you want a more solid basis for media analysis? Do you wish you knew more? Do you have challenging questions for a world authority on the topic? Do you like lunch? Do you remember our awesome post-exam Hannukah party from earlier in the year? Then this event is for you!

The JSA invites all members of the UMAB community to attend
our Year-End-Finale talk on:

The Myths and Facts of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
May 6th @ 12:15pm, in FLH
655 West Baltimore Street

Our speaker will be the world renowned Dr. Mitchell Bard, the author of 17 books, including Myths and Facts: A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict. His impressive biography is below.

As I am sure that this event will be crowded, lunch will begin at 12:15pm, and our speaker will begin at 12:30pm - this should also allow first years to attend after their exam. If food runs out, we will have a backup plan of snacks at the very minimum, but my guess is more along the lines of Chinese food with a bagel and/or pizza backup...

Please feel free to pass on the word to your school or program!
