Elections for 2007-2008 UMB Chapter
Elections for the 2007-2008 UMB PHR officers will be held the week of April 30-May 04. Below are descriptions of the positions to be filled or affirmed. If you are interested in running for a particular office, please let one of the current officers know as soon as possible. Let us know if you have any questions.

Description:
The president of PHR is responsible for coordinating the events of each subcommittee
and lending support and direction to their various projects. Arranging lunch
time talks, contacting local NGO's in order to create alliances between groups
with similar visions, and fundraising are also important tasks particular
to this position. The president also acts as a point person to the national
PHR organization as well as to the other schools on campus.
Description:The PHR treasurer maintains the PHR checking account and maintains records of transactions for reporting to the other officers and to sources of funding such as Student Council. It is the treasurer's responsibility to apply for annual/semester funding from Student Council and to pursue alternative funding for special projects & events from the Student Government Association and others. The treasurer is responsible for depositing & tracking money raised through fund-raising events and for providing reimbursement to chapter members for approved project/event expenses. The treasurer is free to contribute time & energy to other PHR projects as available. The actual job of treasurer takes very little time, really. Beyond that it's up to you.

Description: Duties include organizing and recruiting volunteers to carry out REMEDY protocol (The 07/08 Co-chairs will begin under the guidance of Lisa Meister & Jonas Nelson).
Description: Attend meetings with other campus entities regarding World AIDS Day activities and put together an AIDS awareness & fundraising table on World AIDS Day. Two years ago, the HIV chairperson coordinated a two-day training on HIV testing & counseling (hired trainers, arranged location, found funding, facilitated training day logistics).
Description: The PHR webmaster currently maintains three electronic tools of the UMB chapter of PHR: 1) the PHR website, 2) the PHR-UMB Google group and 3) the PHR student organization information on Medscope. This involves updating/maintaining officer contact information, member information/roster/mailing list, schedule information, and project information. Updating the Google Group and the Medscope information can be done from any computer with internet access and require very little prior experience. Updating the PHR website requires an HTML editing program, an FTP program for file transfer (both readily available), some basic computer skills and a little time.
Description:
Physicians for Social Responsibility is a national organization whose aim
is the protection of the world and it's resources, emphasizing their impact
on the health and safety of society. Issues important to PSR range from worldwide
issues, like curbing global warming and nuclear proliferation, to local issues,
like household contaminants and gun violence.
The position of President of the club is to keep the finances, schedule pertinent
speakers, and coordinate activities with PHR and other student organizations.
Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (ASTT)
This year, PHR initiated a pilot partnership with Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma, a Baltimore-based non-profit that treats survivors of state-sponsored violence. The goal of the project is to build a working relationship between PHR and ASTT so that we can support their work as well as learn about how to identify, approach, and treat torture survivors we encounter in the clinic. This year, students have created and presented health-related workshops for ASTT clients, created a pamphlet that introduces clients to the American medical system, and are creating a program that will allow clients to speak with medical students about managing their own health care.
