In 2001, a group of medical students and faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine started the Student Sight Savers Project in Baltimore, Maryland. The program is now a realized dream, fully functional and has attracted many medical students at the medical school and local residents.
The Student Sight Savers Project is a program that facilitates understanding and exposure of medical students to glaucoma and the field of ophthalmology. In addition, the SSSP has enhanced community education and involvement in diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The SSSP is a dynamic program that can be implemented on a national level. Each medical school would have a participating program that would take palce at participating regions local to each campus. The SSSP program and protocol - included on this website - can be administered by local chapters of the American Medical Students Association (AMSA).
