CHAPTER PROJECT OF THE WEEK: STUDENT SIGHT SAVERS PROJECT
AMA-MSS E-Newsletter, November 22, 2002The Student Sight Savers Project (SSSP) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland is dedicated to the education and screening of glaucoma in our high-risk community. The SSSP is a student-led, student-run organization, funded by the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, that works to educate the community about the risk factors and consequences of glaucoma, and organizes free, monthly screenings. The ophthalmology department has provided the appropriate machines to test visual acuity, peripheral vision, as well as intra-ocular pressures. Another goal of SSSP is to provide medical students an exposure to the field of ophthalmology. They are also encouraging other medical schools to organize and implement similar student-run organizations.
The SSSP of University of Maryland School of Medicine is beginning its second year as an active student-run organization. With the help of the ophthalmology department, its residents, and funding from the AMA and the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, they have planned for an eventful year. In addition to their monthly screenings, they hope to establish a student-run follow-up clinic for patients that they screen in the community. This will allow patients at high risk for glaucoma without health insurance to receive a comprehensive eye exam as well as continuity of care.
